Our Philosophy of Care

At NewRoads Psychotherapy Clinic in Newmarket, Ontario, we believe meaningful therapy begins with emotional safety, genuine human connection, and feeling truly understood. We provide psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families throughout Newmarket, York Region, and across Ontario through in-person and virtual care.

Emotional distress often develops within patterns that repeat over time—in our thoughts, relationships, behaviours, coping strategies, and ways of responding to difficult experiences. Therapy can help make those patterns more visible, understand where they come from, and create opportunities for meaningful change.

Our approach is integrative and evidence-informed. Depending on each client’s needs, therapy may draw from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), psychodynamic and attachment-based approaches, trauma-informed care, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and other evidence-supported practices.

We believe a therapist is more than a problem-solver. The therapeutic relationship can provide a place to develop greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, healthier coping strategies, stronger relationships, and new ways of responding when familiar patterns no longer serve you.

Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, family conflict, anger, addiction, major life transitions, or simply feeling emotionally stuck, our goal is not to fit you into a predetermined approach. It is to understand what is happening in your life, what may be keeping you stuck, and what can help you move forward.

What We Stand for

Compassion

We meet people with empathy, curiosity, dignity, and respect. Therapy should be a place where difficult experiences can be explored without judgment and where you can feel safe enough to speak honestly about what is happening in your life.

Authenticity

We believe meaningful therapy requires a genuine human relationship. Our approach is warm, engaged, and transparent. We listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and respectfully challenge patterns when doing so can deepen understanding, accountability, and change.

Growth

Growth does not mean becoming someone else. It means developing a deeper understanding of yourself, recognizing patterns that may no longer serve you, and building the awareness and skills to make different choices where different choices are possible.

Individuals

We work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, stress, anger, emotional dysregulation, addiction, self-esteem concerns, relationship difficulties, personality-related challenges, and major life transitions. You do not need to have a diagnosis or be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Sometimes people simply recognize that something in their life keeps repeating, isn't working, or needs to change.

Couples

We support couples experiencing communication breakdowns, recurring conflict, emotional distance, attachment difficulties, loss of trust, intimacy concerns, and significant relationship transitions. Couples therapy focuses on understanding the patterns happening between partners, strengthening emotional connection, and developing healthier ways to communicate, repair, and respond to one another.

Families

Family relationships can become strained by conflict, changing roles, separation, loss, major transitions, and longstanding patterns of communication. Family therapy provides a structured environment to better understand these dynamics, improve communication, establish healthier boundaries, and strengthen relationships where possible.

Specialized & Complex Needs

Some concerns do not fit neatly into a single category. NewRoads works with clients experiencing complex relationship and behavioural patterns, high-conflict situations, self-harm concerns, personality-related difficulties, family conflict, and overlapping emotional, relational, or life challenges. Treatment is individualized rather than forcing complex experiences into a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our Approach to Therapy

No two people come to therapy with the same history, relationships, strengths, or challenges. At NewRoads, therapy is individualized rather than built around a single method. We take an integrative approach, drawing from established therapeutic models while adapting the work to the needs of each client and relationship.

Collaborative

Therapy is something we do with you, not to you. Your experiences, goals, values, and feedback help guide the work. Collaboration does not mean therapy is passive. We listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, identify patterns, offer perspective, and respectfully challenge when doing so may help move the work forward.

Evidence-Informed

Our work draws from established therapeutic approaches and psychological research while recognizing that no single model is right for everyone. We integrate approaches based on the needs of each client, the concerns bringing them to therapy, and what may be most helpful in creating meaningful and lasting change.

Trauma-Informed

We recognize that past experiences can shape how people understand themselves, experience relationships, respond to conflict, and protect themselves when they feel threatened or overwhelmed. Therapy emphasizes emotional safety, choice, collaboration, and appropriate pacing while helping clients understand patterns that may once have been protective but may no longer be serving them.

Culturally Responsive

Therapy does not happen outside of culture or context. We approach each client with curiosity and cultural humility, considering how family, culture, identity, relationships, community, values, and lived experience may influence how a person understands themselves and the challenges they are facing.
